Chellar kovil :
15 kms from Kumily. This sleepy little village with its breathtaking view of the plains and cascading waterfalls is a feast for the eyes. The village slopes down to the famous coconut groves of Cumbum in neighbouring Tamilnadu.
4 Kms from Thekkady. This plantin town, closely associated with Thekkady, is situated on the outskirts of the Periyar Sanctuary. An important shoppinjg centre and spice trade centre, the main bus station and most of the medium range accommodation in the Periyar region are in Kumily.
Mangala Devi Temple :
15 kms from Thekkady. This ancient temple is hidden in the dense woods at the top of a peak 1337m above sea level. The temple is built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture. The peak commands a panoramic view of the eastern shopes of the ghats and some hill villages of Tamilnadu. Permission to visit the area can be obtained from the Wildlife Wadern, Thekkady. Mullaiperiyar Dam :
Mullaiperyiar dam was built by British in 1895. It stands on Periyar river whose flow originates from Thekkady. Even though the dam is now in Kerala, most of the water in the reservoir is still released to Tamil Nadu and is cause for considerable political tensions between the two states.The dam is 175 feet tall in height and is 5704 feet long.
45 kms from Thekkady, 26 kms from Periyar. The winding journey to this hilll town, along the Periyar River, offers a stunning view of the rolling hills draped in lush greenery. Velvet lawns, rare flora and fauna add to the beauty of Pullumedu which can be accessed only by jeep. Since it is part of the restricted forest zone, special permission to visit Pullumedu has to be obtained from the Wildlife Preservation Officer, Thekkady. Ph : 04869-222027.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary :
Lying close to the plantations, in the rich jungles of Periyar in Thekkady is one of the world’s most fascinating natural wildlife reserves - the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread across 777 sq.
km, of which 360 sq. km is thick evergreen
forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was
declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. Noted for its
geo-morphological diversity of wildlife and
scenic beauty, the Reserve attracts visitors
from all over the world. The splendid artificial
lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the
Periyar river adds to the charm of the park.
This is the only sanctuary in India where you
can have the unique experience of viewing
wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a
boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of
Periyar remains the large herds of wild
elephants that come down to the lake’s edge. Ph

Tribal Heritage Museum :
Fiver tribal communities live in the Periyar
area. The reserve organises a Tribal Heritage
Programme that lasts for two hours, as part of
which you are taken to a tribal hamlet and also
to the Tribal heritage Museum Traditional
fishing gear, hunting implements and indigenous
medicinal plants are on display here. A tribal
guide will show you around. Erntry fee Rs. 100.

Situated 915 m above sea level, Peermade is
on th e way to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
this pleasant hill station was once the summer
retreat of the Maharajas of Travancore.Peermade
is indeed a cool hill resort in Kerala. Here you
will find sprawling tea, coffee, cardamom,
rubber and eucalyptus plantations side by side
with natural grasslands and pine forests. The
Sufi saint and an associate of the rulers Peer
Mohammed lends his name to Peermade. Peermade
