ECR at a Glance

A trip along the East Coast Road gives rise to a spectacular scenic beauty with beaches and fishermen hamlets. Presently, the East Coast Road has been extended up to Thoothukudi via Chidambaram, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Thiruthuraipoondi, Adirampattinam, Meemisal, Thondi, Ramnad. The total length of the road is 595 km from Chennai to Thoothukudi, but as of now work has almost completed till Ramnad, remaining 200 km work on pending.

Prior to the completion of the East Coast Road, the ECR mainly consisted of village roads connecting one fishermen hamlet to another. The vital connecting link then was the Old Mahabalipuram Road till Mahabalipuram.

The much sought after Pondicherry was reached from Chennai through the still existent and busy route via Tindivanam along NH-45.

Access:  To reach East Coast Road (ECR) from Chennai

ECR Road is most scenic from Chennai, first junctions is Thiruvamiyur and take ECR from there. This road is four lanes till “ECR- Solingalallur” junction.

This road is packed with most of the chennai’s entertainments parks, resorts, and open air theatres like VGP, MGM, Mayajal, and TTDC Boat house at Muttukadu, Kovalam Beach, Beach Resorts…..

ECR is a toll road and starts from Uthandi and you need to pay Rs.48/- (approxi.) for one way trip. There is only limited petrol banks are on ECR. You can full you fuel tanks for fewer prices at Puducherry.

After 30-45 minutes of travel from Thirvanmiyur you will reach mamallapuram where you can plan for your breakfast.

It will take 1 hr to 15 min. you to reach Marakanam from mamallapuram. And from there another 45 min. to reach Puducherry Town.
