The new district was bifurcated from Perambalur district on 23rd November 2007 and the administrative taluks are Ariyalur, Sendurai and Udayarpalayam.

The geographical extent of Ariyalur taluk is 681.19 sq. km; Sendurai 314.82 sq. km; and Udayarpalayam 943.30 sq. km. It is famous for its cement industries in and around it. This was made possible due to its immense limestone store, which is the potential raw material for cement industries.

The formation of the district had witnessed a series of turmoil, with the change in government from time to time. Ariyalur is one of the busiest transport cities. It is also familiar for the Kaliyaperumal Temple situated at 5 km from Ariyalur.

The famous Kangaikonda cholapuram is situated near to it. This town is famous for the temple, which was built by the King Rajendra Cholan of Chola’s Empire. The King Rajendra Cholan is the son of RajaRaja Cholan who built Tanjore Big Temple. Puthukottai Girama panchayat is a panchayat with 100% literate people.
